Most Businesses Don't Fail From a Lack of Profit — They Fail From a Lack of Cash

A profitable business on paper can still run out of money to pay its own bills. Here's why that gap exists and what actually closes it.

A business can show a healthy profit and loss statement and still not have enough cash in the bank to pay its own suppliers or payroll on time. This isn't a contradiction — it's the single most common reason genuinely profitable businesses run into serious trouble, and it comes down to timing, not performance.

Profit is recorded when it's earned. Cash arrives when it's actually paid.

A sale recorded today might not turn into cash for 60 or 90 days if the buyer pays on credit terms. Meanwhile, rent, salaries, and supplier payments are due on their own schedule, regardless of when your customers actually pay you. A business growing quickly can show strong profit while its cash position gets tighter every month, purely because receivables are growing faster than the cash coming in to cover current obligations.

Inventory ties up cash the P&L doesn't show

Money spent on inventory sits on the balance sheet, not as an expense on the profit and loss statement until the goods are actually sold. A business building up stock ahead of a busy season can look profitable on paper while its actual cash reserves quietly drain to pay for goods that haven't generated revenue yet.

The fix is forecasting cash separately from profit

A rolling cash flow forecast — tracking when money actually arrives and leaves, not just what's recorded as earned or spent — catches a coming shortfall weeks or months before it becomes a crisis, giving enough time to adjust payment terms, chase overdue receivables, or arrange short-term financing before it's urgent.

If your business is profitable on paper but cash feels perpetually tight, C S Rushil & Co. can build a proper cash flow forecast to show you exactly where the gap is coming from. Book a free consultation.
